The three engraving methods and what they cost

Machine engraving (most common, £35-£85)

A pantograph machine traces a template and cuts the inscription into the ring with a rotating cutter. The result is consistent depth and a classic bright-cut finish. Most high-street jewellers (H. Samuel, Ernest Jones, independent jewellers) use machine engraving. Turnaround is typically 1-3 weeks. Good for: Roman numerals, standard scripts, initials.

Laser engraving (most precise, £45-£100)

A laser burns the inscription into the ring surface. Laser engraving can achieve finer detail than machine engraving — thin hairline scripts, logos, and fingerprint textures. The critical question about white gold: White gold rings are frequently rhodium-plated for their bright white finish. If the ring is re-plated — which some couples do every 1-2 years to maintain the white finish — the rhodium will coat the inside of the ring and partially obscure the engraving. Discuss this with your jeweller if you are choosing white gold with a meaningful inscription.

The one mistake that ruins the finish

The most common permanent mistake in wedding ring engraving: specifying text for machine engraving on a very thin ring.

On a narrow band (under 3mm wide), the inside surface is too curved for many pantograph machines to engrave cleanly. The machine cuts at a tangent rather than flat, producing uneven depth — some letters clear, some barely visible. This is not fixable without removing metal and re-finishing the inner surface.

The fix: confirm with your jeweller that the machine they use can engrave your specific ring width. For narrow bands under 3mm, laser or hand engraving is the safer choice.
