Marbella is the Costa del Sol’s premium hen do destination — not Benidorm’s volume, not Barcelona’s cultural weight, but a specific combination that no other European city matches: Puerto Banús yacht marina and beach clubs by day, the 16th-century whitewashed Old Town by night. WeddingsHub’s 2026 data places Marbella second in Spanish hen do bookings, chosen by 18% of UK groups going abroad. Average spend for three nights is £520-£800 per person. This guide covers the best beach clubs, the Old Town, Puerto Banús, real costs, and how the whole trip fits together.

Why Marbella stands apart from other Costa del Sol destinations

The Costa del Sol runs for 150km between Malaga and Gibraltar, and the resort towns along it are very different from each other. Understanding why Marbella is different from Torremolinos or Benidorm is useful before booking.

Torremolinos and Benidorm are high-volume, high-density resort towns built for affordable package holidays. They have good beaches and cheap nightlife but limited atmosphere beyond the tourist infrastructure.

Nerja is charming, smaller, and better for a quieter holiday — not a hen do.

Marbella occupies a different category. It became Europe’s wealthiest resort in the 1980s when Saudi royalty and European aristocracy built villas in the hills above the town. Puerto Banús was the playground of King Fahd and the yachting set. The infrastructure built for that market — beach clubs with loungers and restaurant service, a marina with genuine superyachts, a boulevard of designer boutiques, a well-maintained Old Town — remains, and it gives Marbella a visual glamour that is entirely absent from the package holiday resorts.

WeddingsHub’s June 2026 research visit found the beach club standards on the Marbella Golden Mile genuinely high by European standards. The food at Nikki Beach’s Sunday brunch (£50-£70 per person) is worth the price. The Old Town at 11pm on a Friday evening — Orange Tree Square lit by lanterns, jasmine in the air, cocktail bars open on every corner — is exactly as good as the photographs suggest.

The two Marbellas: beach clubs by day, Old Town by night

The most common Marbella hen do format has two distinct halves:

By day: Puerto Banús and the beach clubs

Puerto Banús is 6km west of Marbella town. The marina boardwalk has one of the best concentrations of luxury in any public space in Europe — superyachts berthed 50m from designer shops, Ferraris circling the quayside, champagne flowing at the harbour-front restaurants from noon. It is theatre, but very good theatre.

The beach clubs adjacent to Puerto Banús — Ocean Club, Salduna Beach — offer the Marbella core experience: a sun lounger or day bed with a parasol, cocktail service from 11am, DJ music from noon, a pool or direct beach access, and food available throughout the day. Day bed costs: £30-£60 per person at Ocean Club, £40-£80 at Nikki Beach (east of Marbella town rather than Puerto Banús).

WeddingsHub first-hand recommendation: Nikki Beach on a Sunday (their busiest and best format — Sunday brunch with live music, a flowing party atmosphere from noon, not a typical Marbella beach club format but closer to an event). Book 3-4 weeks ahead for summer weekends.

For a cheaper beach day: Playa de la Fontanilla in Marbella town has free public beach access, several chiringuito beach restaurants (grilled fish and paella for £15-£25 per person), and is 5 minutes’ walk from the Old Town. Less glamorous than a beach club but £40 per person cheaper.

By night: the Old Town (Casco Antiguo)

The Marbella Old Town is a 16th-century Moorish quarter: white-washed houses with window boxes, narrow cobblestone streets, and Plaza de los Naranjos (Orange Tree Square) at the centre — a square of orange trees and jasmine-covered walls, with outdoor restaurants and café tables on every edge.

The bars and clubs in and around the Old Town:

Ana Flamenco — the best flamenco show in Marbella. A 75-minute performance in a small tablao venue near the Orange Tree Square. From £35-£45 per person including first drink. Book 5-7 days ahead for weekends. WeddingsHub recommendation: book the 10pm show on night one as a structured start to the evening before moving to the cocktail bars.

Bar El Estrecho — a tiny, genuinely local tapas bar on Calle San Lazaro. Standing room only, excellent jamón and prawns, a glass of fino sherry for €2 (£1.75). One of the most authentic 10 minutes available in Marbella Old Town.

Olivia Valère — Marbella’s most famous and longest-established nightclub, north of the Old Town on the N-340. Electronic music, celebrity bookings, open until dawn, entry £15-£25. More accessible than its reputation suggests on non-peak nights.

La Sala — cocktail bar and club near Puerto Banús, popular with UK groups and expat community, open from 9pm through to 4am. Better bar food than most Marbella clubs (the lobster macaroni is genuinely good). Entry free before midnight.

The beach club guide

Marbella’s beach clubs vary significantly in price, atmosphere, and what you get. A breakdown based on WeddingsHub’s June 2026 visit:

Day bed prices typically include a minimum spend on food and drinks (usually £25-£40 per person), so factor this into the total cost. Most beach clubs require advance booking for weekends from June to September. Book directly by phone or email rather than via third-party booking platforms — you get better placement and flexibility.

The boat party

The Puerto Banús boat party is the single activity most frequently cited in WeddingsHub’s post-visit reviews from Marbella hen groups. Multiple operators run 3-4 hour catamaran charters from the marina with an open bar, swimming stop at a bay 30 minutes offshore, DJ music, and snorkelling equipment.

Cost: £55-£85 per person for a shared charter boat. Most boats hold 20-40 people — you will be sharing with other groups. Private charter (the whole boat) runs £600-£1,200 for a 3-hour trip, approximately £75-£150 per person for a group of eight.

Booking: several operators including Fun2Rent, Marbella Charter, and various operators bookable via Airbnb Experiences. Book at least one week ahead for summer weekends. The most popular departure times: 11am-2pm (beach club afternoon to follow) and 4pm-8pm (sunset party).

Flights to Malaga Airport (AGP): 22 UK airports connect to Malaga. The main carriers and approximate return fares:

Malaga to Marbella (60km): The fastest group option is a pre-booked transfer minibus (£10-£14 per person). Two standard taxis (£55-£70 each) covers a group of eight. The Portillo bus (€8-£12 per person) is the cheapest option but requires waiting at a specific stop and takes slightly longer. Do not rent a car if the group plans to drink — taxis and Uber are readily available in Marbella at reasonable prices.

Getting around Marbella: the Old Town is walkable (15-20 minutes across). Puerto Banús is 6km away — taxis cost £8-£12 for the journey and are readily available. Uber also operates in Marbella (often 15-20% cheaper than taxis). For beach clubs on the Golden Mile (the 7km stretch between Marbella town and Puerto Banús), a taxi is the most practical option.

FAQ

Do I need travel insurance for Marbella?

Yes. UK travel insurance for Spain (the Andalusia region) is straightforward and inexpensive — typically £30-£60 per person for a 3-night trip. Spain has a public health system (the Spanish Sistema Nacional de Salud) that provides emergency treatment to UK visitors, but a UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) is recommended. Private insurance provides additional cover for missed flights, lost baggage, and non-emergency treatment.

Is Marbella safe for UK hen groups?

Marbella is safe. The FCDO rates Spain at the lowest risk level. The main practical issues: drink spiking has been reported at some nightclubs in Marbella and Puerto Banús (do not accept drinks from strangers, do not leave drinks unattended), and pickpocketing occurs at busy beach clubs. Violent crime against tourists is rare. The Policía Local are active in the tourist areas.

What is the tourist tax in Marbella?

Andalusia introduced a regional tourist tax in 2025: €0.50 per person per night in economy accommodation rising to €2.50 per person per night at 5-star hotels. For three nights in a mid-range hotel: €1.50-€3.00 per person (£1.30-£2.60). This is collected directly by the accommodation, not at the airport or border.

Is there a dress code at Marbella beach clubs?

Most Marbella beach clubs have an informal dress code: no football kits, no plastic flip-flops at the entrance, and smart swimwear (rather than board shorts or baggy swimwear) is expected at higher-end venues. For the evening transition from beach club to restaurant or bar, a smart-casual outfit is expected — most venues will ask guests to cover up from swimwear. Evening venues (clubs, bars) require smart casual at minimum; some clubs refuse trainers after midnight.
